Invest to save

HourglassI was slightly taken aback one day when someone said I seemed to spend an awful lot of time on my wardrobe and clothes in general.

I think I probably do – but only at certain times. I feel I invest a lot of time up front to save it later on.

By thinking about and planning my capsule each season, I give myself the space and time to consider what I need, what I’m re-using and what I need to buy. This suits me better than how I used to be – waking up one day to find the temperatures have dropped, there’s a frost outside and all my jumpers are still packed away.

There would then follow a couple of days, when I skulked around the house, shivering in my tee-shirts as the jumpers were washed and dried. All this to the background of Mr. M-L roaring about why the heat was turned on and it wasn’t even winter yet!

But, by investing a few hours up front, I save myself so much time later. Every morning, when time is precious, I need only spend a few seconds deciding what to wear. And that’s it for the rest of the day – that’s the investment of time – because I’ve done all the work up front.

And, to me, the outlay of a few hours just before the new season, is well worth it, as it saves me so much time for the following three months. The time when I notice it most is when I smugly have a little extra time in my warm bed, rather than standing in the cold in front of my wardrobe, wondering why I have nothing to wear.

I couldn’t go back to my old ways of always playing catch-up, dithering about what to wear, trying on multiple outfits every morning, while realising that the one piece I wanted to wear didn’t go with anything else!

So, yes, I do spend a lot of time but it’s all up front, freeing me up for the rest of the time.

Invest to save – works for time as well as money!

Have a great week 😊

I agree that the original investment is worth the time on a daily basis. I used to experience so much more stress in the morning making choices and spinning my wheels about what to wear. It is well worth the intentional front-end investment of time, and plus your insights have helped others (like me) to know how we can plan some of these important choices as well. 🙂

Oh I am sure you spend far less time planning than some do each day without a plan. And I know you look perfectly pulled together always because of it! Not to mention all the confidence planning gives us. In our design firm our motto is “plan the work and work the plan”. Sounds like you are doing just this every season!

Now there’s a motto I can adopt for my wardrobe, Laurel! I’m a great believer in planning and while to some, it can seem like a waste of time, to me it is an investment 🙂 Another saying I came was ‘fail to plan, plan to fail’!! Lxx
