Summer capsule review

Capsule 1Recently, one of my favourite bloggers, A Small Wardrobe, invited her readers to join in a wardrobe diary challenge. The objective was to record each item of clothing you wore over a month and then review the findings. That way, you could see how many different items you actually wore, why and when you wore them and why you didn’t reach for some pieces. The full post can be found here, including a spreadsheet to help you record what you wore – definitely worth checking out 😊

I thought I had a pretty good handle on my wardrobe but am always interested in trying challenges like this because you never know what you might find out!!

Details:

  • My month ran between the end of July and the end of August.
  • The weather was not really typical of a UK summer as we had a bit of a heatwave. I know some readers will be going ‘enough with the heatwave, you just had a few days of sunshine’ but we’re really not used to that type of sustained heat. And I’m Irish – anything over 16 degrees is practically tropical!
  • The spreadsheet is easy to fill in – I find it easier to type than write, but either works beautifully.

Findings:

A Small Wardrobe recorded her results here – and below are some of my own.

  • 2018-09-02 SpreadsheetMy most worn items were black sandals, lightweight trousers, dresses, chinos and the same few tops in heavy rotation.
  • I include accessories in my capsule and started to record how often I wore my sunglasses but then stopped as I was wearing them constantly – because, you know, heatwave ……
  • I had a denim skirt that I ‘love’ – but never seem to wear.   Hmmm …. can’t really ‘love’ it then. I made myself wear it, just to test it out and have concluded that the colour is lovely but a bit hard to match with my tops and the denim is so stiff that it’s not comfortable.  That would be why I don’t wear it then …
  • I also looked at the fabrics and unsurprisingly, I leaned towards natural fabrics, especially in the heat.
  • I wore a handful of dresses over and over.

Conclusions:

  • I love dresses! Especially in summer!
  • Black sandals are worth investing in, now that I can see how often I’ve worn them – definitely a staple.
  • I will pay more attention to fabric in future – cotton and linen were perfect in the heat.
  • Finally, most importantly, despite having quite a curated capsule, I still reached for a handful of items over and over.

Thank you to A Small Wardrobe for this insightful challenge. I urge you to try it and if you do, I would be so interested in how you get on with it.

Have a great week 😊

Yes, doing the challenge this month. I’ve decided to stop buying clothes for a while too so that should be interesting. Ax

Definitely going to do the Small Wardrobe challenge when I get back from my holidays. I’m sure I tell myself I wear more than I actually do 🙂

Thanks for the comment, Dawn. I found the same – telling myself I wear more than I really do! But when you see the data right in front of you …. it’s a different matter!! Lxx

Dresses are so perfect for our never ending heatwave in FL. They also take the pressure off wardrobe building and let us always look polished. Only tiny problem is the white legs….leg makeup helps!

Oh absolutely, Laurel – I’m a great believer in fake tan! I don’t want to dazzle anyone with my milk-white legs!! Lxx

I am excited about trying the wardrobe diary challenge too! This might be the season that I embrace the capsule. Interesting to note what you observed, and what preferences you have. Without specifically tracking yet, I notice how I reach for the same dresses again and again in the summer. Comfortable fabrics and no need for pairing tops with bottoms make dresses so ideal for me. You’ve inspired me to take on the challenge! Though I’m traveling for 2 weeks in September with a minimal amount of clothes, tracking will be easy. The hard part is making decisions about what to pack at the moment. 😉

Hi Cristy, it sounds as though you’re half way to a capsule already! You seem to have the mindset for it. Your lovely trip will enable you to see if a capsule is for you or not – the ideal time to try it out. Have a wonderful holiday, Lxx
