Minimalists and maximalists

More is more! The mantra of the maximalist!  I should know – I live with one 😊

2017-12-10 GarageNow, the lovely Mr. Minimal-Lol has a lot of sterling qualities! But de-cluttering is alien to his nature. His happy place is the garage, which is full of clutter, odds and ends, useful things, apparently. He takes great joy, from time to time, in producing a knotted ball of twine or an ancient picture hook and saying reproachfully to me: ‘See, this is why I wouldn’t let you throw this out – I knew it would come in handy some day!’.

I’m sometimes asked how I find living with a maximalist, given my minimalist tendencies! The honest answer is that sometimes it’s difficult but mostly it’s okay.

The main thing is mutual respect, without sounding too preachy. I would NEVER de-clutter anything belonging to Mr. M-L without his permission and only ever make suggestions about shared items. I respect his wish to hold onto things and he respects my wish to have things more streamlined. Somehow, we achieve a compromise.

Of course, it can be hard sometimes. But I have no right to impose my outlook on someone else. This way of life is not for everyone and just because we are together does not mean we think the same!

If I want an oasis of calm amidst my perception of creeping clutter, I spend a few happy minutes perusing the blog of Little Black Domicile, which has the most amazing pictures of interior design and décor that I find very restful!  (You can follow this lovely blog here).

One downside, however, is that if something goes missing, Mr. M-L has a habit of asking if I’ve thrown it out, rather than just looking for it!

Occasionally, he’ll cast an envious eye at my smaller pile of ironing or my neat wardrobe or my ability to get ready at a moment’s notice! And while sometimes he’ll get into a flurry of wanting to de-clutter, it doesn’t often translate into action. And that’s fine 🙂

Although I did notice a heap of shirts that he asked me to donate recently. I never thought the day would come. He could rival Jay Gatsby when it comes to shirts!

So, you know, baby steps!

But I like to reassure him that the one feature of my life I won’t ever de-clutter – is him!!!

Have a great week 🙂

Mr K always looks at me as if I ‘m going to suggest killing our first born when I ask him if he is going to sort out some room in his wardrobe! Little does he know though, I have a black bag secreted away with his stuff in, not worn stuff for a number of years 🙂 that I’m going to keep for a another few months. If he doesn’t utter the immortal words ‘have you seen my …..? ‘ by Spring, they are off to the charity shop!

Hiya Dawn, well – I’m liking that strategy!! De-cluttering by stealth! Of course, the chance of Mr. K noticing anything is missing is probably zero 🙂 I might borrow that particular tactic myself! Thanks so much for reading, commenting and continued support, Lxxx

Morning! Mr. LBD is also a more is more is more is more type of guy! He once bought coffin size rubbermaid boxes to store extra clothes in (that he still had from high school!) and proudly presented a second one for me! My sat under the bed empty for awhile till he discovered it and filled it up too. Yet, after all these years, he is the one thing I’d never part with! Thank you for the kind words and link in your post today…the feeling is sincerely mutual Sister blogger.-Laurel
