Weekend Away Capsule

2017-05-12 Longchamp bag

Another weekend away, another capsule! I visited family again in Dublin last weekend, so it was another opportunity to flex my packing muscles. I had a fair idea of what we would be doing, it would be quite a casual weekend and we were only going for 3 days – easy peasy!

But then I heard that Storm Brian was going to lash Ireland that weekend. It was not looking good. I re-thought my packing plan.

I packed an extra pair of jeans; I substituted my autumn boots – suede – for a pair from my winter capsule – leather; and I swapped my thin, pretty scarf for a chunky one, again from my winter capsule.

At one point, I think delving into my winter wardrobe would have felt like ‘cheating’. But I want my minimalism to be practical and not just a pointless exercise, for the sake of doing it.

And was I glad for this mindset change!

We went out on Friday and got soaked through. But my trusty boots kept my feet try and my chunky scarf kept the wind out. When we got back, I changed into my spare pair of jeans and was set to go again.

And my trusty packing cubes saw me through once more! I practically evangelize about them! I now have my friend in Kerry converted – she used some on a recent trip to Spain. My friend in work invested in a lovely purple set and even brought them in to show me! And my sister-in-law used a set for her weekend in Geneva!

But the biggest break-through was Mr. Minimal-Lol complaining that he couldn’t fit everything in to his bag when packing for last weekend. I didn’t say anything but quietly left a cube beside his bag. He picked it up, fairly begrudgingly I have to say. And then couldn’t believe how much it held. ‘You should have mentioned these before’ he said accusingly. I bit my lip …. Really???!!!!! Have a great week 😊

Minimalism to me means that our closets can be quick change artists…we have everything we need in one spot and dont have to hunt thru a box or bin to be ready for anything.

Hi Laurel, what a brilliant description – ‘quick change artist’!! You’re absolutely right, it took me about 10 seconds to access the things I needed. Fewer things = more time! Thanks for reading, Lxx
